I'm part-way through this video, and I've seen three of the damned things. Two are missing parts and the third has spray-paint all over its butt.
(WARNING: This video does show at least one person hit by a car. He seems to be okay, but still. And there are about 8 minutes I have yet to watch, so it may get worse. EDIT: Yeah, I just saw someone ejected from a rolling SUV. Definitely NSFW and not for the squeamish or easily offended.)

My understanding is that Mercedes/BMW etc are so common over there that American cars kind of hold more cachet

There's nothing else to do. It's not excusable, but it is understandable. The country is so incredibly conservative that they've basically outlawed fun.
